"Jazzin"

Jan13

Herewith, a sampling of power portraits from photographer Herman Leonard’s eye-popping exhibition at Manhattan’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, “In the Best Possible Light” (on view through February 14). Photographs: Herman Leonard

Billy Eckstine at the Royal Roost, New York City, 1948.

Duke Ellington, Paris, 1958.

Fats Navarro at the Royal Roost, New York City, 1948.

Frank Sinatra, New York City, 1956; print damaged in Hurricane Katrina, 2005.

Miles Davis, Montreux, Switzerland, 1991.

Louis Armstrong, Paris, 1960.

Billie Holiday, New York City, 1948.

Dexter Gordon with Kenny Clarke (at rear) at the Royal Roost, New York City, 1948.

(Vanity Fair)

I love.....this piece! The ever dapper and handsome Billy Eckstine can certainly give the likes of Cary Grant a run for their money. In my opinion, he was really underrated, but I'm sure he lives on in the heart of many. That's not meant to slight or undermine any of the other greats such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and of course Frank Sinatra. Billie Holiday is another of my favorites (as you can see from my blog page), she is truly a vision in this picture and did much to earn her nickname "Lady Day."

I'm Diggin her Style: Shala Monroque

Jan13

Shala Monroque’s had one of Paris Fashion Week Spring 2010 most talked about street style look. Her refined eclectic taste had everyone at attention.

A pop of bold color on her feet courtesy of platform YSL heels easily updates this basic attire to modern heights.

At the Museum of Modern Art’s 41st Annual Garden Party, Shala Monroque mastered the art of looking pulled together. She looked radiant in a monochromatic look that included a champagne Prada top, tiered skirt and platform heels in a bevy of textures that enlivened her ensemble.

A clean faced Shala Monroque is, as expected, one-step-ahead of the fashion crowd in one of Spring 2010 runway trends: gingham. Here Shala Monroque injects some refinement to the All-American print with her signature turban and a seriously fierce necklace. The right accoutrements make a world of difference here.

It’s safe to say that Shala Monroque has fallen hard for Rodarte. The Editrix is often photographed wearing the label. Here in Rodarte’s kaleidoscopic mini-dress and Prada jeweled sandals, Shala Monroque demonstrates how color and texture can merge to create a captivating look.

Go ahead and drool, we know we are. These babies are from the Prada’s Fall 2008 collection. A bit rock&roll, a bit polished lady, these stunning pieces of walking art are the perfect accessories for this art enthusiast.

She turns up the volume of her casual look with a statement necklace and polished turban, but Shala Monroque isn’t stopping there. The leopard skin bag and dark wooden bangles add even more magpie, style layers to her denim and gingham look.

Shala Monroque does lady-like chic in a tailored, wool coat and elaborate, pretty heels.

Shala Monroque, here fêting the opening of Rodarte’s Paris shop, reminds us of how the classic contrast of black-and-white always works.

Pop magazine's Editor-at-Large Shala Monroque definitely has style.....I love the way that she mixes things up.

Christies Plans Website for Gucci Collectors

Jan13

Gucci has always been vigilant to crack down on counterfeiting and trademark infringement, but now they’re taking a new angle on brand protection.

On January 18, 2010, Gucci and Christie’s will launch “Gucci Collector: Presented by Christie’s”— the very first Gucci-certified online destination for authenticating and appraising vintage Gucci products.

A dedicated section on www.christies.com will allow owners to upload photos of their vintage items and submit an appraisal request.

A team of Christie’s experts as well as Gucci’s own in-house archivists will provide an assessment of the item, and Christie’s will appraise the value of each submission.

Owners will then have the opportunity to sell their items to Gucci, or in a future Christie’s auction, if desired.

It may also help collectors research potential acquisitions and avoid getting taken in by counterfeits.

In addition, Gucci plans to open up a museum in Florence in 2011. Both the museum and the online website will help preserve the history of the brand. (Luxuo)

Dior "Lady Rouge, New York" The Making of

Jan13

As anticipation builds up over David Lynch’s ‘Lady Dior’ commercial, fans of French actress Marion Cotillard, who again stars in the ads, can already peek behind the scenes of the print campaign for the range.

The making-of shows star photographer Annie Leibovitz directing Cotillard, who is wearing Dior’s latest collections, as creative director John Galliano and other onlookers are watching the scene.

The latest chapter of the Alfred Hitchcock-inspired ‘Lady Dior’ commercial was recently shot by Lynch in Shanghai.

Dior is not only venturing into the realm of movies, however, but also into that of music with a clip to Franz Ferdinand song Lady Rouge premiering online Jan 14.

Meanwhile, the owner of Brooklyn-based restaurant Moto confirmed to Dossier that, as rumored, it is indeed directing legend Martin Scorsese who has been filming the new commercial for Chanel’s No. 5 fragrance, starring French actress Audrey Tautou.

Both campaigns are part of the movie trend in fashion and beauty, with many labels no longer settling for commercial ads and telling stories instead, often in several episodes. (Luxuo)

Style Icon: Iris Apfel

This eighty-six year old lady is the epitome of style. She wears big, bold jewelry and beautiful ornate clothing. So popular is she, that a book was written about her titled: THE IRREVERENT IRIS APFEL: RARE BIRD OF FASHION. The book contains clothing and jewelry that is absolutely breathtaking. I like the fact that she has and revels in her "individual style". She does not follow the "fashion path"....she has created her own.

Gracious Beauty Audrey Hepburn

I think that she will always be remembered most for her role in Breakfast At Tiffany's, but from what I have read about her, she was a beautiful person inside and out. Here is a quote that was spoken by her that I think sums up the type of person that she was...."never let yourself grow up believing that anybody if different from anybody else.....love each other and do what you can for your neighbor".
