Lena Horne: Tribute to A Legend

May10

I'm sure that by now, many of you have heard about, legendary singer, Lena Horne's passing. I thought it only fitting to feature a picture retrospective of one of my favorite ladies. As you can see from the pictures here, she remained a vivacious beauty, even through her later years. Though she was lovely, there was so much more to this dazzling lady.

She was among MGM's star elite, during Hollywood's "golden years." Appearing in musicals for the famed studio, she refused to be cast as the stereotypical African American maid, which was most common during those early years. She was a lady with a sharp and quick wit, a ready smile, but one who didn't mince words. She appeared on many shows over the years, such as Sanford and Son, The Cosby show and those variety shows which were so popular during the seventies. Whatever she did and wherever she was, she was simply captivating! As the pictures further allude, she was a lady of impeccable style. The dresses and gowns worn in those black and white photos are absolutely luscious.....perfectly suited to her lithe frame.

Prior to her passing, there was talk of, singer, Alicia Keys playing Lena in a Biopic. I believe those plans have now been finalized and a production is in the works. I must say, Alicia does bear a resemblance to Ms. Horne, and I look forward to seeing the upcoming Biopic. Here's to a fabulous lady, may she rest in peace.

This is a small group of some of my favorite ladies of style and fashion. I must say that I still must put Iris Apfel at the top of my list. I was flipping through a recent issue of Oprah's magazine and in the style section, there was Iris Apfel and several other ladies in various designer clothing. Iris had on a bright green blouse, with high waisted, khaki, wide legged pants and of course looked great. She a statement that aptly describes her incredible style. She said, "I'm not a minimalist about jewelry. Three necklaces and umpteen bracelets and I'm in Heaven"!

Style Icon: Iris Apfel

This eighty-six year old lady is the epitome of style. She wears big, bold jewelry and beautiful ornate clothing. So popular is she, that a book was written about her titled: THE IRREVERENT IRIS APFEL: RARE BIRD OF FASHION. The book contains clothing and jewelry that is absolutely breathtaking. I like the fact that she has and revels in her "individual style". She does not follow the "fashion path"....she has created her own.

Gracious Beauty Audrey Hepburn

I think that she will always be remembered most for her role in Breakfast At Tiffany's, but from what I have read about her, she was a beautiful person inside and out. Here is a quote that was spoken by her that I think sums up the type of person that she was...."never let yourself grow up believing that anybody if different from anybody else.....love each other and do what you can for your neighbor".
